"Why We're Not Emergent" & The Ooze
The new book Why We're Not Emergent (By Two Guys Who Should Be) raises lots of interesting questions about the emerging conversation from a conservative Reformed viewpoint. The Ooze is invoked often in it! For my take, check this out.

Inducing Labor
Here is an exerpt from an article by Darin Hufford called Inducing Labor
... "It is both unhealthy and implausible to see the organized church system as being the beginning and ending of the Christian life. A healthy Christian in my opinion is a person who passes through the birth canal of institutionalism and into a new world of responsible and personal spirituality. My personal goal with this movement is to identify people who are long overdue and encourage them to "run towards the light" and pass through the birth canal. There is an entirely new world outside of the organized system of church that is waiting for thousands of Christians to experience."

Searching
after my last pastoral position i decided to take a year off from pastoral ministry to "find my head" - and my heart - now i am ready to "get back in" and move forward in doing what I have confirmed in my heart God wants from me - and that is to pastor a church.
i am praying that God will open the doors for a church in the LA [long beach/whittier/hunting beach kind of area - but anywhere in LA is cool] area - but i am open to where God is leading. while i am "putting out resumes" [not big on that by the way] i am more interested in finding a place where relationships are seen as something important - if you have been reading my blog on ginkworld you know i am looking to "live the church organic" - where relationships are important and people are accepted for all their faults and baggage - i know it sounds crazy, but i believe there is a community of faith out there looking for me, because i trust God 100%
if anyone knows of such a place - if anyone knows of a community of faith looking for a pastor that is a bit on the "edgy side" - please let me know - while i have planted in the past, i do not have the energy, drive or call to plant again :) while it has to be "the right community of faith" i am willing to chat with anyone about the possibilities -
thank you - and please keep me in your prayers over this transition in my life -

Coming Out of the "Pagan Christianity" Closet
So: My buddy Frank Viola's book Pagan Christianity? has been causing quite the stir. Many responses have been positive, but some clearly have taken issue with matters both of tone or content. I've sort of just realized that I've largely been sitting on the sidelines of the debate raging through the blogosphere...I feel deeply ambivalent about the talk going 'round, like the kid with a lot of friends whose friends are really really different from each other. One day the kid has a birthday party, and the friends are all under the same roof for the first time...and they ain't getting along so well! My journey of knowing Jesus led me into house church waters in 1998, and into the pre-emergent discussion in 2001. I have since felt like the bastard child of both, a hopeful amphibian breathing the air and water of two similar yet distinct movements/phenomena.

Our Composting God
My ever-thoughtful wife has written a post comparing house church practice with Communism. Here is my response...
Well, wife-o-mine, a 'dictatorship of the proletariat' was pretty tough to implement-it had never been done before! For years, Marxist thinkers and revolutionaries had fine-tuned their critique of capitalism, and it was largely quite valid. I think had they spent as much energy articulating what they were for, the transition from Russian czardom to a distributed system could have worked better and with less bloodshed. Hmm... Transition
Thoughts on the transition …

Once I started on this journey of waking up to living and love, I never could be claimed back to the old patterns of plodding through the motions of “being spiritual for all the world to see. It began as a process of realizing just how short life is, and how soon it all passes by. I became more and more unwilling to use my “time, talents, and treasure (so to speak) on anything that did not feel natural and true to whom I was inside. I no longer had the desire to argue beliefs with those I loved. It all seemed like a dead end of only liking those who believed like I did. Although to be honest, I wondered if I still believed in anything any more.
While I had patience for learning to experience life in new ways, I had no patience at all for engaging in dead and tired expressions of religion that I had once embraced. I once thought that being a church leader was the highest calling I could live out. Now I believe that the highest and most fulfilling use of my life is just letting it unfold one conversation at a time. Where will it lead and what will I become as I spend my days away from what I was told was a “life calling? I have no clue. But I’m excited to wake up each day and find out. As I have said as of late: “If God is Love, then I’m into that. Let life begin.
Thanks for listening again. And remember, if you need to talk, you can call me anytime at 419-783-9593. Or shoot me an email at shokthegerman@gmail.com. If you ever get to Defiance, Ohio, we need to have a meal together. Seriously, I have the time now. J

9 Days Left: One Laptop Per Child
There is a 2 for 1 deal at the One Laptop Per Child's website. Between November 12 and November 26, OLPC is offering a Give One Get One program in the United States and Canada. This is the first time the revolutionary XO laptop has been made available to the general public. For a donation of $399, one XO laptop will be sent to empower a child in a developing nation and one will be sent to the child in your life in recognition of your contribution. $200 of your donation is tax-deductible (your $399 donation minus the fair market value of the XO laptop you will be receiving).

Selected photos from Soularize and the Bahamas
Fred Olsen Cruise Lines parallel parked in downtown Nassau. Not sure how much it cost to plug the parking meter. Brennan Manning giving a workshop. Rita Brock's main session. New Providence Community Centre's Garden where the church has a greenhouse to research agriculture for the island. Bahamas imports 99% of their food and the cost of food is incredible. An art garden at New Providence showing the history of slavery in the Bahamas. Jim Schoch and Father Richard Rohr on the deck of the Soularize HQ. The view that I woke up to each morning Bishop Tom Wright speaking in his main session Mark Scandrette and Kyle Martin chatting on the boat ride back from Rose Island Dwight Friesen relaxing on the way home from Rose Island. The Beach Bar on Rose Island. There are literally hundreds of other photos over on the Soularize Photo Pool on Flickr. Labels: photography, Soularize
