Leading & Emerging Culture

Building Healthy Community

What if learning could be based on the real world where you live and serve?

What if the curriculum was designed and modified by the learners in the group?

What if instead of being given a reading list, you could create a bibliography of the most up-to-date resources and talk to the authors/experts and get behind the text, straight to the heart of the topic?

What if classes were facilitated rather than taught, using peer-to-peer learning, relationally based rather than geographically based - combining face-to-face retreats and net meeting/phone conferences?

What if the learning didn't stop just because class was dismissed, and your discoveries and group learnings could live on with web archives, links and life long friendships?

ETREK Learning Groups: Peer-to-peer learning groups comprised of between 15-25  learners and a facilitator. These unique learning groups meet face-to-face at the beginning and end of the 6-month series to meet each other, develop the topics to be explored, and celebrate learnings. In the intervening months, the group members participate in facilitated group phone conferences with experts or authors in the agreed upon subjects. Peer-to-peer phone conferences are used to further explore the topics being discussed. Private learning sessions one-on-one with the facilitator for personal application. For each subject there will be a reading list, and members will be able to capture and share their learnings and ideas via ETREK's online webtools. Graduate credit is available through Biblical Theological Seminary Seminary or Fuller Theological

Press Release from Biblical Seminary

ETREK- East Breaking News:

THE ETREK JOURNEY HAS BEGUN

After three years in development and pilot courses, the national launch of ETREK Collaborative Learning Journeys began on September 14 and 15 at Biblical Seminary in suburban Philadelphia.

Spencer Burke, founder of “The Ooze” (www.theooze.com) and author of Making Sense of Church began the journey with a two-day gathering on the Biblical Seminary campus for Leading and Emerging Culture. Over the following 5-7 weeks, guest faculty join the group on 90-minute conference calls. Guest faculty includes Leonard Sweet, Brian McLaren, Sally Morgenthaller, Dan Kimball, Frederica Matthews-Green, Karen Ward, and Andrew Jones. The final meeting is a two-day gathering back on Biblical’s campus in Hatfield, PA, December 14-15, 2004.

Biblical Seminary offers opportunities for continuing education, master level credit, or doctoral credit in each ETREK course. The next opportunity to join the journey at Biblical will be a two-day gathering, January 31-February 1 for Building Healthy Community led by Joe Myers, founder of www.languageofbelonging.com and author of Search to Belong, which is rocking the small group world.

Specific information on the next ETREK course gathering at Biblical can be found on the Biblical Seminary website, www.biblical.edu.

FAQ's

We have also compiled some FAQ's that might help you make your learning plans this year. If you have any questions or need some clarification please contact Todd@ETREK.com or call (405)392-4753 for more information.

Register with Biblical Seminary or  Fuller Seminary .
Also, send an e-mail with the following: include your name, phone #, address, church / organization, short description of your church / organization's community and why you are interested in this program. Send to Todd@ETREK.com or call (405)392-4753 for more information

I'm interested.  What is my next step?
To register for an ETREK Collaborative Learnign Journey you need to go online and register with Biblical Seminary
or  Fuller Seminary . Also send us at ETREK some basic information. The following are the basic questions, which you can e-mail back to Todd@ETREK.com

Do you have a payment plan or scholarships available?
We understand that some students will be able to have tuition expenses paid by their church just like a convention or other learning opportunities.  Some, however, will need either time or financial assistance. We suggest you E-mail
Todd@ETREK.com and we will coordinate with Fuller Seminary regarding payment or with Biblcial Seminary.

What is the accreditation for ETREK?
Through Fuller Seminary and Biblical Seminary, The Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada accredits ETREK Collaborative Learning Groups.  You may want to inquire at your seminary, if it is not Fuller, to see about transfer of credit from Fuller.

Do I have to be a "Lead pastor?"
Realizing that the definition of a lead pastor has a wide range, so here's what we're looking for in our Groups:  you need to be leading or have a significant leadership role in your church / organization that you are a part of, with a desire to reach the emerging culture. You may view ETREK as a means to continue your learning journey and for this reason ETREK would be well suited for you.

Does the emerging church/culture only apply to 18 - 35 year olds?
We understand the emerging culture to be a psychographic not just a demographic, so as long as you desire to engage the emerging culture, that is where we are focused.

Are both men and women allowed to participate?
We do not genderize leadership, so the Learning Groups are open to all, men and women alike.

Why is the first meeting in person?
We desire these groups to be based on relationship and experience. You will meet each other and get to know one another over meals, through the learning environments and conversations during the 2 days.
Example: The first gathering, on the Campus of Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, CA, affords us the privilege of setting and relationship. Meeting at a place dedicated to life-long learning - The Horner Center for Lifelong Learning is located at Fuller - offers and excellent setting to begin the journey. Relationships, institutionally with Fuller, and interpersonally with members of the group will help create a great learning environment that will carry beyond the "schedule."

What is the time requirement for this program?
The Learning Group is a 10-12 week commitment. The Summer Course is 5-6 weeks in length.

Each Initial Two-Day Gathering will include:
2 day gathering on either the Biblical Seeminary Campus in Hatfield, PA or the Fuller Seminary Campus in Pasadena, CA
1 conference call with "expert" with group and facilitator. There is always potential for a "bonus" call.
Face to face time developing relationships for the group learning journey.

The Intervening Weeks betwen the first and second two-day gathering will include:
5 conference calls with "expert" with group and facilitator. Schedule for these calls given during two-day event.
1 - 30 minute private call with facilitator each month (for Fall, Winter and Spring) or 1- 1 hour or 2-30 minutes private calls during the Summer Courses
  Peer to peer calls

Each Culminating Two-Day Gathering will include:
1 conference call with "expert" with group and facilitator
Face to Face debrief time with group and facilitator to evaluate the learning journey
2 day gathering with group and facilitator

Thanks for your interest in the ETREK Learning Groups; I hope you will be joining one of our groups in Sept.

Spencer Burke, Founder and Todd Littleton, Executive Director
