The Real Buddha Bar

I few days ago I heard a story on NPR about Buddhist monks starting a bar. I thought it might be interesting to my friends here.

Buddhism in Japan reminds me of Christianity in the US. An institution that used to have much more influence and is now struggling to stay "relevant."

I honestly think Christians here can learn much about Christianity through Buddhism, especially the brand of Buddhism that is developing in the West, which is very practical and non-religious. I wonder how much Japanese Buddhists could learn from an "Eastern" Christianity?

    Like what, for example?

I was literally wondering out loud, I have no idea what they could learn. Zen is very cerebral but there are other Buddhist practices that engage the emotions such as "metta" or "loving-kindness" practice. I would love to talk to someone that was born and raised Buddhist and then got "baptized in the Holy Spirit."

I've been trying to get my friend to open a Christian bar. He would be good at it. But I think he is afraid of the criticism he would have to endure.

Shaolin Monks are Buddhist, so you practice Buddhist philosophy by practicing Kung Fu.

There's no real response to that with Christianity.

The only Christian response to Kung Fu is to turn the other cheek! That way the bruises are even.

Kung fu does not strike unless there is no other choice. Running away is preferably to striking; striking is mostly there for the defense of others, or when there is no other choice. Kung fu is life.

Because I read about it, and follow a course from a Shaolin teacher. Book is "The Shaolin Workout" by Sifu Shi Yan Ming.
