The Golden Rule

The Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Some people today want to turn the golden rule into a Holy Maxim: As a condensed and reduced down touch stone proposition that would create unity between different religions. I have always thought that that was an overly simplistic notion. The following is a quote from the American Philosopher Eric Hoffer: "The remarkable thing is that we really love our neighbor as ourselves: We do unto others as we do unto ourselves. We hate others when we hate ourselves. We are tolerate towards others when we tolerate ourselves. We forgive others when we forgive ourselves. We are prone to sacrifice others when we are ready to sacrifice ourselves. ........ It is not love of self but hatred of self which is at the root of the troubles that afflict our world." .... From the book: The Passionate State of Mind" by Eric Hoffer I would think that for Christians the right thing to do is to love yourself by loving God with your whole heart, mind, and strength so that you can love others as yourself.
The Humility that comes from others having faith in you.

@Marvin, wow that's a great quote. If I wasn't up to my eyeballs in reading I'd totally check out this Hoffer fella.

Eric Hoffer is an American Philosopher who wrote about five books that have been printed in dozens of languages. His most famous book is "The True Believer" The interesting thing about Hoffer is that he had almost no formal education. He was a transient worker during the great depression and he continued working as a longshoreman after he became a famous author. His books are rather short, but full of interesting ideas.

    That's interesting Marvin.
I've found that Solace and Compassion are intrinsically linked.
You can't really have one without the other.
It's like inner peace and world peace (or peace for others).
Inner peace (solace) is a necessary prerequisite for world peace, or having others have peace. Compassion.

Ultimately, I believe Solace and Compassion suffer from entanglement.
